Killing God (Young Adult) Kevin Brooks

Blurb
The main character of this story is 15 year old Dawn Bundy. She doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of the girls at her School, but doesn't really care.
She lives with her alcoholic Mum after her Dad disappeared 2 years ago after 'finding god'. Dawn blames God for this. She adores her 2 dogs and has a rather odd obsession with the band Jesus and Mary Chain, which was a favourite of her Dads.

During the course of the book we see her question her sexuality, question God, and care for her mum and dogs. We see strange friendships develop, violence occur, hear of abuse, and  learn of drug crimes. We also see how much she loves her Dad despite him deserting the family home/her.

The ending is unexpected, shocking somewhat, but very fitting, All of the loose ends are tied up beautifully.

Although the title of the book suggests a religious slant, it's not, but rather a theme which runs in the background of the story.

Kevin Brooks goes where no teen author dares to go and tackles issues which other authors find uncomfortable to address. He never writes 'down' to his audience, but rather with them. A lot of kids will be able to relate to the issues raised in his books.
